The significance of Roman museums for today’s generation:
Roman History is one of the most studied and researched topics by the archeologists and the historians all over the world. The excavations in Italy, the Roman civilization, ancient Roman ruins and the whole culture that was found provided a number of evidence that helped the archeologists come to realistic conclusions.
The conclusions were based on the variety of figurines, coins, art pieces, statues, vessels, jewelry, etc. that were found at the excavations sites. Today, we find a variety of Roman antiquities in the ancient Roman museums. Ancient Roman famous museums:
Vatican museum house is the most famous Roman museum that exhibits the famous elegant masterpieces from the palaces. These were initially built for the Renaissance Popes. The Julius II, Sixtus IV and Innocent VIII were some of these popes.
The additions were made to the exhibits in the Vatican museum in the 18th century. This was the period when the precious artwork collected by the earlier popes was exhibited and made open for all.
National Roman Museum
Palazzo Massimo
The famous National Roman Museum is spread over various locations such as the Palazzo Massimo, the Baths of Diocletian, the Crypta Balbi and the Palazzo Altemps.
The National Roman museum exhibits the coins, sarcophagi, frescos, mosaics, statues, jewelry, figurines, earthen and other ruins of Rome. From the imperial and republican ages, from the medieval period, the ruins are preserved in this museum.
Galleria Borghese Museum
Galleria Borghese is the museum which is located in beautiful Villa Borghese Park and it is known for the superfine collection various classical sculptures.
It is particularly known for the Bernini’s delicate marble of Daphne and Apollo and the very prominent, David. The marble depiction of Canova of a reclining Pauline Bonaparte was also one of the added attractions.
Gallery of Paintings
There was a gallery of paintings which consisted of artwork of various great artists such as Correggio, Raphael, Caravaggio, and also some art pieces from other master Renaissance painters.
A major portion of the paintings gallery was occupied by the artwork by the nephew of the Pope Paul V and the very famous Cardinal Scipione Borghese.
National Gallery of Modern Art
The National Gallery of Modern Art which is very well known as the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Italian is a modern art museum. It exhibits the artwork right from the 19th century to the 20th century.
Art pieces of the world Famous Italian artists like Giorgio de Chirico, Luigi Pirandello, and Alberto Burri, are preserved in the National Gallery’s collection. The National Gallery also preserves the artwork done by renowned international artists like Goya, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Kandinsky.
Capitoline Museum
Capitoline museum is one of the ancient Roman museums that have a collection of famous pieces of art in form of fragments and a bust that comes from a colossal statue of Constantine.
A huge equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is one of the attractions. The Capitoline Museums also exhibits ancient Roman coins, epigraphs, sarcophagi, and a picture gallery including the artwork from Caravaggio and Titan.
